Boy drowns in a river

A 12�year-old boy drowned in River Ewaso-Nyiro at Nkben area in Narok South on Wednesday evening.

Confirming the incident, Narok South Police Boss, Mohammed Farah Maalim said the schoolboy who has been identified as Leyian Pere had been sent by his parents to fetch water from the river when he slipped and drowned in the 5:00pm incident.

Maalim said the body has been taken to Narok Referral Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem and further investigations.

Cases of drowning in the county have been reported in the recent past. Just a fortnight after a 27 �year-old man drowned in the same river in Olkiriene area in Narok South, another epileptic man drowned in a dam at Kamaget village in Ilkerin area in Transmara East as he tried to fetch water from the dam.

In a similar incident, a 57 year old man at Kapsenewet village. Kusumek village in Bureti drown two days ago after he jumped into the swollen waters of Kipsisin River.

Confirming the incident on Thursday the area Chief, Hilary Langat said the man, Jonathan Bore had gone to the river to take a bath after working in his farm in the morning hours when he allegedly jumped into the river and tried to swim but was over whelmed by the raging waters.

Chief Langat said according to the eye witnesses the man was smoking a cigarette and at the same time, speaking to other villagers across the river while making fun before he removed his shirt and asked the fellow villagers to join him in the swimming party and then jumped into the river.

Efforts by the villagers to help him were futile as the river is now swollen and dangerous, said the chief.
