The government has constituted a secretariat that will oversee the operations of the Strategic Food Reserve Trust Fund.
According to the Board Chairman of the Strategic Food Reserve Trust Fund, the new secretariat will ensure efficiency and transparency at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Dr. Noah Wekesa said the secretariat which is expected to begin work immediately under the Ministry of Agriculture already has its in-tray full with a verification report to look at to ascertain true farmers who transacted business with government.
Dr. Wekesa was optimistic reiterating his commitment to work hard in ensuring that the government delivers on its Big Four Agenda key among them food security.
Food security is one of the strongest pillars of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy and as such we will support the president in realizing his goals, Wekesa observed.
The who handed over a verification report of the Strategic Food Reserve Trust Fund to the Ag. Agriculture Principal Secretary, Prof. Hamadi Boga called on the secretariat to ensure that they work within the constitution in managing the fund as well as consult before dispatching monies to the farmers.
Sunkuli further said that issues to do with NCPB have been sensitive and have cost other leaders their integrity and jobs, warning them to be cautious not to have corruption allegations against them.
I do not want any of you to have his name maligned while handling these issues. Maize and sugar are sensitive, you need to consult the board before any monetary action is taken, Sunkuli cautioned Wekesa and his team.
His Agriculture counterpart Prof. Boga emphasized on the importance of structures in organizations and further urged the board to put in place policies that will safeguard its operations.
The Shs. 2.2 billion trust fund is targeted at building strategic reserves to help stabilize food supply and prices in the country.
Currently, the country relies on a strategic food reserve managed by the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) which only stocks maize used for relief emergency supplies.
The secretariat will be composed of officials and Principal Secretaries drawn from the ministries of Agriculture, Interior and Coordination of national government and Devolution.
