United States President Barack Obama has been urged to strongly speak against injustices in his trips to Kenya and Ethiopia.
A letter by Human Rights Watch signed by 14 NGOs and individual experts says Obama should call for human rights reforms in the two countries.
Obama is expected in Nairobi tomorrow before he proceeds to Ethiopia on Sunday.
“Kenya and Ethiopian governments have been using the pretext of national security to clamp down on core freedoms, which not only violates their international legal obligations, but undermines efforts to address terrorism,” reads the letter.
“Both countries face real security threats but we are concerned about the way each government has responded, often with abusive security measures and increased efforts to stifle civil society and independent media.”
