Siaya County Director of Internal Audit, Collins Owino has raised fears that his life is in danger claiming unknown people want to eliminate him.
Owino said he has been receiving several phone calls, including SMSs warning him to tread carefully while conducting his audit duties or he may have to be eliminated.
The auditor said the threats begun in October last year when he was called by an unknown person asking him to cease auditing accounts of eight ministerial departments in the County.
Some of the departments that have elicited audit queries are believed to be the executive (finance), agriculture, health and education.
The auditor added that the eight departments have since failed to submit their financial reports to his office for further perusal and scrutiny of their financial expenditures.
Owino added that he ignored the caller only for the threats to persist forcing him to reconsider his position.
“The caller used different phone numbers to boldly issue threats to me and even saying he was ready to face any eventuality”, a worried Owino said.
He said that the caller was working in a syndicate with a cartel of persons within the county government who are well versed with the operations of the audit office since he threatened him with a sack.
The auditor was addressing the press in his Siaya office on Tuesday where he said he will record a statement with the police in due course.
He revealed that last week on Monday, a black saloon car trailed him from Kisumu to Ndori blocking the earth road he uses to connect to Siaya town.
“I decided to slow down for the vehicle to pass but it failed raising suspicion forcing me to speed off to Ngiya Market then back to Siaya town”, added the visibly shaken auditor.
Owino who claimed that he was not aware why he was being targeted said his office has already forwarded crucial financial audit reports to relevant authorities including, EACC for further action to be taken.
He asked the County executive to intervene and help resolve the threats before things go out of hand.
Owino added that his resolve to bring sanity on financial management of the public funds will not be deterred by few self seekers out to enrich themselves.
