Apologise to Achani for bias, MCAs told

FIVE leaders from Kwale county have issued a 14-day ultimatum to MCAs to apologise for discriminating against Deputy Governor Fatuma Achani.

The leaders are Kenya Ferry Services board director Mshenga Ruga, woman representative aspirant Fatuma Masito and local leaders Juma Raso, Richard Onsongo and Khatib Mtengo.

They said they will deal with MCAs if no apology is made to the Shirazi community.

They five said MCAs’ utterances that Achani is not a Digo but is from the Funzi sub-tribe of the Shirazi community amount to discrimination.

Ward representatives, led by Juma Maone and Omar Mwakwambirizwa, had said the Digo community was shortchanged in 2013 by the Duruma because the deputy governor post was taken by another tribe instead of theirs.

During a rally at Shimoni market on Friday, the Ruga-led group said the assembly will face the wrath of residents if they fail to apologise.

Ruga told MCAs to meet Shirazi elders and apologise to Achani. “We will defend leaders from our community at all costs. Achani is not the deputy governor by mistake,” he said.

Onsongo said: “We will not tolerate reckless utterances among leaders aimed at dividing residents. The county assembly majority leader has become a rogue and failed to defend the executive. He should have controlled MCAs.”

Masito said it is bad to see elected leaders insulting a deputy governor.
