Apokor FC goalkeeper Samson Okwangu’s heroics earned his team the inaugural Amukura Central Ward soccer trophy after saving two penalties against Okatekok FC at Kaliwa Primary School on Sunday.
Centre referee Mathew Otakamong called for penalties to decide the winner after the two teams drew 1-1 at stoppage time.
Moses Kanyango had given Apokor a 1-0 lead after 75 minutes before Geoffrey Eskodah leveled for Okatekok at stoppage time to force the game into penalties.
The two teams were locked 4-4 after the first five penalties with Okwangu saving the fifth penalty. Both teams lost the sixth sudden death penalties.
Apokor scored the seventh penalty, thus making it a must shot for Okatekok. However, Okwangu spoilt the party when he saved Harrison Obwaku’s shot to hand his team the title.
The winners went home with a trophy, a ball, a set of uniforms and Sh. 30,000 while the runners up �Okatekok, received a trophy, a set of uniforms, a ball and Shs.20, 000.
Kaliwa who beat Kamosing 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in a playoff match received a set of uniforms, a ball and Shs.5, 000.
Fourth to eight finishers received Sh3, 000 each.
In the ladies category, Kaujakito who outclassed Kaliwa 4-1 went home with a trophy, a ball and Shs.15, 000 including top ups.Kaliwa were contented with a ball and S0, 000
Present at the finals of the inaugural tournament included Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi, Agriculture Executive Moses Osia, Busia Governor’s wife Judy Ojaamong, area Ward Representative Moses Ouma, his Chakol South counterpart Okodoi Maskini and Busia County Gor Mahia chairman James Anyango.
Mulomi promised participants that he will ensure the future county budgets feature all sports including bicycle races to tap and nurture talents in the county.
On his part, Ouma said he will not rest until at least three players from his ward join top clubs in the Kenyan premier league including Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.
Busia Assembly culture and sports Chairman Patrick Obuya said only15 MCAs out of the 35 managed to organize tournaments this financial year adding that he will push for harmonization of prizes by various wards in future competitions.
