African Development Bank has released sh.1billion shillings for the construction of a water project to serve parts of Ugenya and Ugunja Sub-counties, the managing director of the Siaya Bondo water and sanitation company (SIBO), George Alaka has said.
Alaka said that construction works for the project is set to kick off in September and will serve the major urban centres in the two Sub-counties, such as Sega, Ukwala and Ugunja townships.
He was speaking Friday at Nyasanda primary school in Ugunja during the commissioning of a sh. 17 million Nyasanga /Ugunja project which was rehabilitated using funds from the Water Sector Trust Fund.
He said that the project, which stalled in 2016 targets to have 450 connections by the end of 2018.
Alaka said that the Water Sector Trust Fund had also set aside funds for rehabilitation of the Bondo Water Supply so as to improve services in the area.
The managing director said that SIBO was committed to ensuring that the residents of Siaya County got clean and portable water but lamented that their efforts were being thwarted by dilapidated infrastructure, vandalism and corruption.
We are working round the clock to solve these challenges so that our people get water at a reduced cost, said the MD.
Addressing the occasion, Siaya County Executive Committee Member for Water, Adrian Ouma called on SIBO to explore the possibility of using cheap renewable power to run its water supply projects instead of the expensive electricity.
Instead of electricity, SIBO should consider using solar energy to run its pumps and reduce overhead costs said Ouma.
