NAIROBI, A 60-year-old primary school teacher, Florence Machogu, has won the latest draw of the Sportpesa Mega Jackpot, a local lottery operated by the locally-based SportPesa Kenya website.
Machogu made 17 out of 17 correct predictions alongside two other lucky people — Daniel Rono and Geofrey Keitany — to pocket 37,058,791 shillings (about 359,000 US dollars) each.
With only a few weeks remaining before Machogu retires from her teaching career in Molo Nakuru County, it was a perfect opportunity for her to spend winnings, which she says she will invest by buying land.
Married with six children, Machogu only spent 400 shillings to place the Sportpesa Mega Jackpot bet after failing several times before.
She becomes the third woman in Kenya to win millions after Elimah Khanaitsa who won 22,049,424 shillings in January last year and Quinter Nimo who won 31,002,159 shillings in March this year.
The two others who won the Mega Jackpot with Machogu are Geofrey Keitany, a police officer in Baringo, and Daniel Rono, a farmer in Bomet. Both also made 17 out of 17 correct predictions after staking 100 and 200 shillings, respectively. For Keitany, betting has become a hobby that he is not ready to quit soon.
