Three people died and another injured after a boda boda motor cycle they were riding on was hit by a vehicle at Githuaini junction of the Sagana-Karatina road, Kirinyaga County.
The injured was rushed to the Kerugoya Level four hospital in serious condition and admitted at the facility, following the Sunday evening accident.
An eye witness, Simon Wanjohi said he saw the boda boda operator struggling to maintain balance of his overloaded and speeding bike before the accident occurred.
As the boda boda rider was desperately trying to control his motorcycle, which was right in the middle of the busy road, a Probox car emerged from the opposite direction and the two collided head on killing the three instantly, he said.
The witness said the boda boda operator and his three passengers had no chance of escaping the head on collision due to the high speed the bike and the Probox vehicle were moving at.
County Police Commander, Leah Kithei said the rate of boda boda-related accidents had reached alarming proportions in the area.
She observed that most accidents were being caused by over speeding and overloading.
The Commander said she has instructed her Traffic Police team to embark on a sensitization programme on road safety for the boda boda operators,in order to curb further losses of life through accidents.
Kithei also instructed the officers to crack down on those riders who carry more than one passenger.
We cannot afford to continue losing innocent lives of Kenyans through careless and over loading boda boda riders, but we must also warn passengers to avoid such overloaded bikes, she said.
