Online company Soka have unveiled a 16-team Nairobi women’s tournament, starting mid next month. The event is as a result of the interest generated by recent national women’s team, Harambee Starlets performance in the Olympic qualifier. Starlets are still in contention of the event after losing 1-0 to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana first leg of the qualifier.
Soka director Patrick Korir revealed that the online company has channeled five hundred thousand in prize money. “We want to support the continued growth of women football. In this inaugural edition, we will feature 16 teams drawn from the Nairobi Provincial League and we hope to get future Starlets from this tournament,” said Korir. The winners of the tourney will pocket Sh250,00 with the runners up walking away with Sh100,000. Third and fourth-placed teams will pick Sh50,000 and Sh25,000 respectively. Individual winners including the top scorer, best player and best goalkeeper will be awarded Sh25,000 each. In a draw released yesterday, Street Revolution will play Golden Angels, Sunderland Samba duel with Kibagare Gilrs while Wysa Ladies face Victoria Girls. Other matches are–Kibera Girls vs Kayole Starlets, Beijing Raiders vs Mountain View, Golden Starlets vs Musa Ladies, Embakasi United vs St. Anne’s Eaglets and Dandora Starlets vs Maringo.
Nairobi branch chairman Michael Ouma said the tourney will be hosted at the refurbished Camp Toyoyo grounds in Jericho starting from the quarter final stages. Meanwhile, the men’s version of the same tournament has reached the last 32 stage with the matches set to be played at the Nairobi Technical grounds on August 8-9. Tournament sponsor Nick Mwendwa lauded how the tourney has been run to date commending the host federation and clubs for their sportsmanship. Mwendwa said the winner will pocket Sh1 million.
