15 years in jail for defilement

A Nanyuki Court on Thursday jailed a middle aged man for 15 years for defiling a 17 year old girl.

Edward Muriuki was convicted and sentenced by Chief Magistrate (CM), Lucy Mutai for the offense he committed at Gushishi area in Meru County on February 28, 2015.

The minor had told the court that on the material day, she went to the shop owned by the convict at 5.30 pm after walking home from school only for the accused to force her into another room where he defiled her.

She said after sexually abusing her, the convict threatened to harm her should she divulge the matter to anyone which made her remain mum until a teacher discovered she was pregnant and informed her parents.

The parents then reported the matter at Timau Police Station and Muriuki was arrested and charged.

In his defense, Muriuki told the court that the girl’s parents had offered her to him as a wife and he spent the said night with her with their knowledge. However, I was unable to pay the dowry which infuriated them and they decided to sue me, he claimed.

But, the CM dismissed his defenses, saying the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable that he had committed the offence and sentenced him accordingly.

The accused has 14 days to appeal.
