MOMBASA, Ten people — two men, five women and three children — have been confirmed killed following a boat accident in Lamu, about 340 kilometres northeast of here on Tuesday.
Fifteen others survived the harrowing incident after the boat capsized in the Mkanda Channel while travelling to Lamu Island from Ndau.
About 30 passengers were on board at the time but only ten bodies have been found so far by divers and Kenya Navy officers.
Lamu East County Administrator Shee Kupi is overseeing the rescue efforts. The accident was caused by high tides at sea. The number of those who died is expected to rise, he said.
Lamu Governor Issa Timamy said the National Disaster Management team and the Navy arrived late.
My condolences to the families of those who died, we stand with them, he said.
