Two people drowned and two others escaped death narrowly after an ill-fated boat capsized at Kadeki Village while crossing River Sio in Matayos Sub County, Busia.

The body of Lawrence Odhiambo, 24, and Ruth Ajwang, a Class Seven pupil at Indoli Primary School were still missing Sunday.

According to an eye witness, the passengers were crossing the swollen river in a boat when it overturned midstream.

“My daughter drowned as she tried to swim in the swollen river after the boat overturned.

“I mm appealing to the county government to help me retrieve her body so that I can give her a befitting burial,” said Redempta Atieno, who spent the night camping at the site.

Among the survivors was a three-year-old girl who was rescued by the boat’s operator during the Saturday afternoon incident.

Villagers have been camping at the site since Saturday as the rescue operation went on.

They appealed to the county government to construct a bridge in the region to link Matayos and Nambale sub counties.

“Unless a bridge is constructed, we will still lose more lives because this is the common means of transport,” said Charles Juma.

This incident comes barely two months after another boat capsized at the same spot killing a Standard Eight pupil from Bumutiru Primary School.
