Technical University of Kenya (TUK) beat Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) 2-1 in a Kenya Hockey Union men’s National League match at City Park Stadium on Saturday.
In another match, Daystar University earned a hard fought 1-0 win over Thika Rovers to record their fourth win of the season. TUK and JKUAT were locked at 1-1 going into the last five minutes before TUK striker Rioba Marwa fired in the winner to give his team the three points to the delight of his team-mates adding to his opener in the first half.
TUK team manager Simiyu Nyaranga praised his charges for the hard-fought win adding that they were the better side and deserved to win by a wider margin.
“We controlled this match from start to finish and we made it difficult for ourselves when we conceded. The lads, however, never gave up and we got the win late-on,” Nyaranga said.
Marwa fired TUK ahead in the 18th minute blasting the ball past JKUAT keeper Alex Muge from a Tom Mumo penalty corner.
JKUAT levelled 10 minutes later when Richard Mutumbo’s effort found its way past TUK keeper Moses Obushuru after a great counter attack.
TUK should have gone ahead before the break when Marwa was put through by Mumo but fired wide with only Muge to beat. The striker had another chance two minutes later but was again let down by poor finishing.
JKUAT attacked more in the second half with a series of penalty corners, but were unable to utilise them as TUK’s defence stood firm. With the game seemingly headed for a draw Marwa popped up with the winner off a penalty corner.
“Our defending was not so good today. We were poor in possession and allowed the opposition too much freedom in midfield. We improved in the second half but were unable to hold out until the end,” JKUAT coach Isaac Nandukule said.
Daystar University were the better side in their match against Thika Rovers and got the breakthrough in the 59th minute when Kevin Mbugua struck a sweet taken goal past Rovers keeper Robert Aseda to give his team the win.
