Four people, among them an Administration Police officer were early Sunday arrested while transporting sandalwood in a government vehicle.

According to Lake Nakuru National Park Senior Warden Dickson Ritan, the four were transporting the seven-ton cargo from Alabal in Baringo County to Nakuru when they were intercepted at Eden Estate in Nakuru.

He added that the lorry, registration number GKB 622F, attached to Baringo County, East Pokot Sub-County, used an alternative route but was trailed to Nakuru.

Mr Ritan said the cargo had a street value of Sh20 million and was harvested in Baringo County.

The suspects will be arraigned in court on Monday, November 23, 2015.

The lorry, together with the cargo of the rare tree species, was taken to KWS regional headquarters in Nakuru.

The sandalwood tree, which takes over 80 years to mature, is facing extinction due to excessive logging.
