The parents of the 230 underage children arrested on Mashujaa Day in a city club may be charged with child neglect.
A children’s services officer says the parents may be jailed for up to three years or be put under probation.
While handing over the last group of 26 children to their parents, an officer from the children department told the parents that the court would decide their fate.
The officer said the parents’ fate would be determined by the reports that would be filed by officers from the children department.
“If the children officers establish that the parents failed to take care of their children, they will be prosecuted for child neglect,” the officer told the Nation.
The report will be handed over to Senior Resident Magistrate Faith Munyi.
The officer directed all the parents to escort their children to officers from the department near their homes.
“You are required to turn up for the mention of the cases against all the 230 children on December 9, 2015,” the officer told the parents.
Parents signed a personal bond of Sh150,000 each to secure the release of their children.
The children were arrested at the Jerry City Hotel and Bar on Dubois Road while dancing and drinking alcohol.
Police arrested the children after a tip-off from the public.
The owner of the club, which has since been closed, has gone into hiding.
