Youth polytechnics in Nyeri County will be upgraded as the regional government seeks to boost their capacity to absorb more recruits.
Intending on graduating 2,000 youths by 2017, the institutes will be divided into two categories: county technical training centres and community vocational training centres.
Nine of the institutions will be grouped into County Technical Training centres while the rest will be classified as Community Vocational Training Centres.
“These institutions are very important but their impact in the county is very little. We want to pick nine of them, specialize them for specific courses to avoid spread of instructors in of them and expand them to offer boarding facilities,” the county Education Executive Elijah Nguyo said.
Mr Nguyo said that each county technical training centre will be required to register a business enterprise to enable its graduates access government tenders.
At the same time, the County is planning to condense polytechnics from the current 48 to 39.
