Ng’etich, Chepkirui win X-country series in Kangaru

Seasoned road runner Cleophas Ng’etich from Kapsabet and 2005 World Youth 1,500m champion Sheila Chepkirui eased off to victories in second leg of the Athletics Kenya Cross-country Series in Kangaru on Saturday.

Ng’etich, who finished fifth in the opening leg of the Series in Nairobi last weekend, got his act right on Saturday, winning the men’s 10km race in 30 minutes and 04.91 seconds. Ng’etich edged out Arita Stephens from Thika (30:10.9) as Nakuru’s Bernard Kemboi (30:19.7) settled third followed by Peter Wambua (Nyahururu) in 30:22.5.

Thika’s Chepkirui, who settled for bronze in 1,500m at the 2007 World Youth Championships, clocked 33:47.0, beating Prison’s Nancy Nzisa, who came third in Nairobi, to second in 33:49.2 in the women’s 10km contest.

Njoki Nd’ungu from Nyahururu romped home third in 33:512.6, as the reigning Kenya Defence Forces 5,000m and 10,000m champion Veronica Nyaruai came in fourth. Nyaruai is the 2005 World Youth and 2006 World Junior 3,000m titles.

Cyrus Loikong from Mfae and Machakos’ Celia Maira reigned supreme in junior men (8km) and women’s (6km) races. Loikong pounded won in 24:02.8, followed by Nicholas Kosimbei (24:03.6) and Ephraim Mwangi (24:09.6).
