Sixteen teams will take part in the second edition of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Fans’ Fun Day set for November 21 at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The inaugural edition held at the City Stadium attracted 12 teams with Team Simba emerging victorious in the seven-a-side showpiece.
Soka, SuperSport, SportPesa and KPL are the four teams that will make their debut at this year’s event whose goal is to bring football fans together as well as foster cohesion through the beautiful game.
The theme for this year’s event will be ‘Zero Tolerance on Hooliganism’ and organisers have planned a photo exhibition of past hooliganism cases in Kenyan Stadia.
“The whole idea is to have fans in a social setting enjoying themselves while at the same time discussing issues affecting local football and hooliganism is part of this,” the event’s main organiser Jeff Kinyanjui said.
KPL CEO Jack Oguda has thrown his weight behind the initiative and urged local football fans to embrace the idea and turn out in large numbers.
“Last year’s event was very successful and it was amazing to see fans from the various teams coming together to play and have fun. This is a very noble idea and I’m sure this year’s edition will be better,” he said.
The main event will be a seven-aside tournament but there will be several off the pitch activities like short sprints, eating competition, table football and dancing competition to keep the crowd entertained.
There will also be an exhibition match between a select fans’ team and the Kenya Police FC.
