Grief has engulfed two villages in Homa Bay County after two pupils committed suicide in separate incidents in the area.
In the first incident, a class seven pupil committed suicide at Sero village in Homa Bay Sub County.
The girl (name withheld), 15, allegedly hanged herself using a rope she tied on the roof top of her step grandmother’s house last Saturday.
Family members could not explain reasons why the pupil of Ogande Primary School decided to take away her life.
Some of the family members said they were worried of what might have made the girl to commit suicide.
Confirming the incident, Homa Bay County Police Commander John Omusanga said they had launched investigations regarding the death.
There was a rope from the ceiling down to her neck. We are investigating circumstances surrounding her demise, said Omusanga.
He expressed concern over what might have culminated in the death. It is unusual for a person of that age to take away her life. We have begun a probe into what led to her death, said Omusanga.
The police boss asked parents to be close to their children saying parents should offer guidance and counseling to their children as a measure to keep them safe from engaging in bad habits, added Omusanga.
Elsewhere, another 20 year old man suspected to be a student also committed suicide in Homa Bay town for being deprived of his girlfriend in a local bar.
Wycliffe Ouma Otieno hanged himself from a tree near Homa Bay polytechnic.
Eyewitnesses said Otieno was disillusioned by a man who deprived him of a girlfriend he had taken to the bar.
He was saying people would find him dead the following day. We thought he was joking but it happened, said an eyewitness.
According to Omusanga, the information they had received was that the young man was a college student.
We have been told he is a student. We are awaiting relatives to disclose the information, said Omusanga.
The bodies were removed to Homa Bay hospital mortuary for postmortem.
