Students sustain injuries as school bus collides with a lorry

About 30 students were injured when their school bus collided with a lorry at Dudi on Busia / Kisumu road.

According to a witnesses, Mrs. Alice Obwayo, the school bus, ferrying 30 students of Bishop Obiero secondary school was heading to Kisumu while the lorry was travelling in the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

Mrs. Obwayo, who is also the chairperson of the Dudi traders, said the lorry was allegedly speeding when it apparently lost control and hit the bus.

She said residents who rushed to the scene pulled the injured students from the wreckage and rushed them to Yala level 1V hospital for treatment.

Gem deputy county commissioner, Mr. Geoffrey Mayamba, confirmed the accident, saying the students were coming from the regional music festivals held at Maliera secondary school in the sub county.

Mayamba said two students were referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital for specialized treatment and 28 others were treated and discharged.

The commissioner called on drivers to be cautious and observe speed limits while approaching urban centres along the highway.

He said the wreckages of two vehicles were towed to Dudi police post as investigations were launched.
