SEARCH BEGINS FOR NEW KENYAN ELECTORAL COMMISSION MEMBERS

The search for new commissioners to sit on Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has commenced after the IEBC selection panel announced vacancies in the posts of IEBC Chairperrson and members.

Those wishing to head the commission are required to have at least 15 years experience in the legal field as well as meet the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Kenyan Constitution. Interviews for shortlisted applicants will be held from the middle of next month.

The positions of chairperson and members of the IEBC were advertised by the selection panel in local daily newspapers Monday.

Those wishing to apply for the post of chairperson must have a degree from a recognized university and have proven relevant experience in electoral matters, management, finance and governance with 15 years experience in the legal field as well as meet the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Kenyan Constitution.

Qualifications for members of the commission include sufficient knowledge in governance, electoral matters, finance and law and possession of a degree from a recognized university. The chairperson and members of the electoral body will serve for a single term of six years.

Eligible candidates are required to submit their applications by Nov 7, 2016.

The constitution of a new commission will officially mark the exit of the Isaac Hassan-chaired IEBC whose members voluntarily agreed to vacate office following a negotiated agreement.
