The Orange Democratic Movement National Chairman, John Mbadi and Kasipul MP, Oyugi Magwanga will lobby Parliament to allocate funds next financial year to upgrade Kabunde airstrip in Homa Bay County.
Speaking at the launch of the airstrip in Homa Bay town on Thursday, the legislators called on stakeholders to consider expanding the airstrip to international status in future.
The Governor for Homa Bay, Cyprian Awiti said the airstrip will boost the local economy by attracting tourists to various attractions in the area.
“We have Ruma National Park, Simbi Nyaima and other tourist attraction will experience more tourists from various countries as a result of this air strip”, said Awiti.
Hombay women county representative, Mrs. Gladys Wanga told hoteliers in the county to rehabilitate their facilities to accommodate more guests.
“There are many guests who spend in Kisumu mainly because of the airport which is there. This facility has given that opportunity to our hoteliers too”, said Wanga.
The county Executive for Transport and Infrastructure, Eliud Otieno said the airstrip with a runway of 1.25 km is set for extension up to 1.8 km.
“We are in the process of acquiring 23 hectares to allow us expand the runway up to 1.8 km. We are also negotiating for more airline companies to bring their airplanes to promote competition”, said Otieno.
Homa Bay Governor, Cyprian Awiti, his Deputy, Homilton Orata, Legislators, Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay County) and Millie Odhiambo (Mbita) also attended the ceremony which was presided over by former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga
