PS survives Al Shabaab attack in Lamu

State Department of Public Works Principal Secretary, Arch. Mariam El- Maawy Thursday survived a brazen Al-Shabaab kidnap attempt that left four people in her entourage dead at Milihoi area in Lamu West.

Security sources in Lamu said two others, among them the PS, were injured in the 3 pm attack when suspected Al-Shabaab militants ambushed her vehicle.

The PS survived with two gunshot wounds and has since been airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Arch. El-Maawy was rescued by KDF soldiers who were on patrol in the hotspot area.

The attack raises fears over safety of the Lamu highway road with residents reportedly siting Al-Shabaab militants patrolling the Pandanguo, Pangani, Milihoi and Barsuba areas.

Speaking to KNA after the incident,Lamu County Commissioner,Joseph Kanyiri confirmed the attack saying the PS and the injured are out of danger.

The PS was in Lamu for the launch of the Spatial Plan for Lamu and was later heading to Mpeketoni to meet Coast Regional coordinator, Nelson Marwa, for a separate function when the attack occurred.
