The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya(APDK) Siaya branch has called on those living with disabilities to form groups through which they can benefit from government funds and contracts.
APDK Siaya branch chairman, Reverend Kenneth Wachianga lamented that though the government has created several avenues through which those with disability could benefit, just a few have joined organised groups through which government funds are channelled.
Rev. Wachianga who was speaking during the association’s branch annual general meeting held at their offices in Siaya told people living with disability to engage in income generating activities that will make them command respect in society instead of relying on the age old street begging.
The prelate further challenged them to go for leadership positions, including elective political seats, adding that they should not resign to fate hoping to be assisted by their able bodied counterparts.
This is the time that politicians use people living with disability by giving them false hopes. We should not allow this he said adding that as voters, they should not be influenced by cheap handouts to vote in inept leaders.
Rev. Wachianga said as citizens, people living with disability must ensure that the country got the right leaders right from the grassroots, saying that perpetual lamentations of bad leadership while the country votes in people of questionable character will not help.
Ensure that you make the right choice of leaders during the next general elections, he said adding that the electorate must be wary of politicians who bribe them to be elected.
