Muhoroni residents counting losses following night fire

Residents of Junction Estate in Muhoroni Sub County are counting their losses after a mysterious fire destroyed several houses and business premises in a Friday night incident.

Area Assistant Chief, Francis Audi said there were no casualties following the inferno that razed down 10 houses, including two shops and three eating places.

Audi said the fire is suspected to have started from an unoccupied house before spreading to the nearby structures in the 2’00am incident that is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault.

Robert Obeto while speaking on behalf of the affected families on Friday estimated the loss at over Sh.1.5 million ranging from business stock, household items and the physical structures.

I have personally lost goods worth over Sh.300,000 in stock while several of my neighbours are talking of between Sh.50, 000 to Sh. 400, 000 in damages, narrated Obeto.

The affected households say the tragedy has robbed them of the only means through which they supported their families and are now appealing to both the national and county governments to come to their rescue and help them rebuild their sources of livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Chief has advised the residents to ensure proper planning in the construction of their houses by leaving adequate space that can discourage the rapid spread of fire to adjacent buildings in the event of similar incidents.
