Over 17 cooperative societies in Mandera will be deregistered due to cash crunch problems, an official says.
John Ndungi, Mandera director of trade while presiding over the World Cooperatives day said deregistration of the 17 cooperatives societies follows directives from Kenya Cooperatives Union headquarters.
The societies facing deregistration include, among others, women societies that deal with irrigation farming along River Daua.
Ndungi said the county has registered 149 cooperative societies with a cash asset of Shs.500, 000 attributing the low capital turn over to the biting drought as many are livestock-based.
Many of our livestock have died due to drought leaving our members with nothing to save in the SACCOS, said Ndungi.
