President Uhuru Kenyatta has pardoned 7,000 petty criminals who are about to clear their jail sentences on the occasion of Mashujaa Day, or Heroes Day, which is celebrated on Oct 20 to honour those who died in the struggle for the country’s independence.
During the celebrations held at Kenyatta Stadium here Thursdy, President Kenyatta reiterated his call to the Judiciary to speed up the conclusion of graft cases pending in court.
The celebrations were also attended by newly appointed Chief Justice David Maraga who was sworn in on Wednesday.
During the swearing-in ceremony at State House Nairobi, Justice Maraga pledged to reduce the backlog of cases and automate court proceeding to ensure justice to all.
The colourful Mashujaa Day celebrations were attended by thousands of Kenyans who trooped into the stadium from as early as 6 am.
