There was no medal for Kenya on Day Two of the World Under-20 Championship after Sandra Chebet and Sheila Chelangat failed the test in women’s 3,000m final on Wednesday at Zawisza Stadium, Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Chebet and Chelangat wound fifth and sixth in personal best times of 8:55.77 and 8:59.89 respectively in a race won by Ethiopia’s Degefa Bayenu in a championship record time of 8:41.76.
Abdulkadir Gosa from Bahrain and German Konstanze Klosterhalfen eased to national record times of 8:46.42 and 8:46.74 to take silver and bronze respectively.
“The race was just tough. I can’t blame anybody but my body just failed to respond well,” said Chebet, the 2014 World Youth 2,000m steeplechase silver medallist.
“It was just not our day. We have lost. We just need to tighten our training and focus on the forthcoming races,” said Chelangat.
Kenya’s Maureen Thomas finished third in women’s 400m second semi-final to qualify for the final due Thursday.
Thomas clocked 52.52 seconds to finish behind Jessica Thornton from Australia and Jamaican Junelle Bromfield in 52.12 and 52.18 respectively.
