Keep off unstable soil areas, public warned amid landslide

Nyamang’ara village in Gatundu North on Thursday morning experienced a 150 meters radius landslide following a heavy downpour.

And following the incident that saw destruction of maize crops, members of the public have been urged to keep off areas with unstable soil for safety.

Confirming the incident Area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Amos Mariba said no injuries occurred as a result of the phenomenon.

There was a landslide in Nyamang’ara village at a farm belonging to one Benson Gikonyo. We urge members of the public to be alert and keep off unstable soil areas to avoid negative eventualities, said Mariba.

Mariba warned that continued heavy rainfall in the area could lead to more damages and attributed the incident to highland nature of the region.

He however, promised that his office was up to the challenge and called on the public to volunteer information regarding any such incidents.

I would like to urge Gatundu North residents to plant trees and cover crops to avoid landslides and soil erosion, said Mariba.

The DCC also urged the residents to immediately vacate their areas of residence whenever an alert was issued to avoid losing lives.
