NAIROBI, Two victories on the final day helped Kenya to finish fourth overall with four gold medals as the 2017 IAAF World Under-18 Athletics Championships came to a close at the Kasarani Sports Centere here Sunday.
Jackline Wambui won the day’s first gold for Kenya when she triumphed in the firls’ 800 metres. Wambui completed the two-lap race in a time of 2 minutes 01.46 minutes, ahead of compatriot Lydia Cherutoh, who bagged silver. Hirut Meshesha of Ethiopia finished third to win the bronze.
Kenya won its second gold of the day in the boy’s 2,000 metres steeplechase through Leonard Kipkemboi Bett who clinched victory in 5 minutes 32.52 seconds and he was followed closely by compatriot Clephas Kandie Meyan who won silver in 5:33.07.
Ethiopia’s Alemu Kitessa won the bronze medal after finishing third in 5:42.10.
In the boys 3000m, Kenya’s Edward Zakayo clocked to finished second while another Kenyan, Stanley Mburu, took the bronze medal. Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega won gold with a time of 7:47.16 seconds.
The five-day championships attracted the participation of about 1,200 athletes from more than 130 countries.
