Marsabit county government has been put on notice by five commercial plot owners within Marsabit town’s central business district (CBD) for failing to pay rent.
Through Halake Rambo Muthoga and Muiruri advocates, the clients, Abdullahi Boya, Sori Sora Kenne, Sora Jillo Danso, Paul; Gache and Barako Guyo Danso are demanding Kshs 1.2 million in rent arrears accrued in the last 12 months.
Diida Halake said the county government has failed to honor a one year agreement it entered with his clients in August 1, 2016 for sh 40,000 per month exclusive of value added tax (VAT).
Mr. Halake told Kna that the devolved unit through the department of trade, tourism, and industry as well as enterprise development was to process payments to the lessor in two equal instalments each covering six months.
He said that county government failed to submit payments adding that the chief officer of the concerned department has ignored a demand notice sent to him on June 8, this year and as such the law firm has no otherwise but to institute legal action against the county government.
The county government leased the plot registration number 11969/160 which is located along the Marsabit-Moyale to relocate small business traders who were operating in the old market in order to pave way for the construction of a modern one. Efforts to contact the chief officer, Muma Arbale did not bear fruits as he was said to be away.
