NAIROBI, The Chinese Athletics Association has selected 51 athletes to compete at the IAAF World Under-18 Championships to be held in Nairobi from July 12 to 16.
The championships, to be held at Kasarani Stadium here beginning next Wednesday will be an historical event for Kenya as the the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to host the championships, which has attracted more than 2,000 athletes from 159 countries.
The Chinese Athletics Association was the latest to name its squad to represent the nation at the championships. Some of their best medal hopes in Nairobi include long jumper Gong Luying, javelin thrower Liu Zhekai, and walkers Zhang Yao and Zhang Xiaole.
During the 2015 U0-18 championships held in Cali Colombia, Kenya finished in the second overall position in the medal standings with five gold, four silver and four bronze medals behind the United States who bagged eight golds, five silvers and six bronzes.
Kenya topped the medals table in 1999 and 2009 and will be aiming to do so once again as the host country this year.
The IAAF World U18 Championships Nairobi 2017 will be the final edition of the event as IAAF will be shifting its towards driving regional and continental competitions.
