Naivasha sub-county hospital has disposed of 17 unclaimed bodies that have been lying in the hospital mortuary for the last five months.
The bodies, some of which were badly decomposed were buried in a mass grave at Longonot area by officers from the department of public health.
Efforts by the hospital to dispose the bodies had been delayed in the last two months for lack of funds.
The delay had adversely affected operations at the hospital mortuary whose capacity is 12 bodies at any given time.
The hospital superintendent Dr. Joseph Mburu said the exercise was done after officers from public health obtained a court order.
Dr. Mburu said most of the bodies were brought in by police officers and no relatives had claimed them despite appeals through the media.
The hospital is spending so much to dispose unclaimed bodies and this is a major concern to us as some relatives are abandoning bodies in the mortuary, he said.
He appealed to families to care for their loved ones even in death by according them a decent burial instead of leaving the burden to the hospital.
