Prof Rose Mwonya has been appointed vice-chancellor of Egerton University.

She will take over from outgoing vice-chancellor James Tuitoek, whose second five-year term ends on January 13, 2016.

Prof Mwonya becomes the university’s fifth VC and the fifth woman VC at Kenya’s public universities.

According to an appointment letter from Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, Prof Mwonya becomes the fifth VC of the Njoro-based university.

Prof Mwonya was the deputy vice-chancellor for academic affairs and served in that position for eight years.

FIRST WOMAN VC

Her appointment makes her the first woman VC of the 76-year-old premier agricultural institution started by Lord Egerton.

It means Kenya now has five women vice-chancellors, out of the 31 VCs at public universities.

The others are Prof Teresa Akenga of the University of Eldoret, Prof Olive Mugenda of Kenyatta University, Prof Mary Walingo of Maasai Mara University and Prof Mabel Imbuga of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Prof Mwonya holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in Home Economics Education from Iowa State University in the United States and a diploma in Agriculture and Home Economics from Egerton University.
